Exercising for Enjoyment

For the past five or six years I've loved exercise. Not all the time, but on the whole I've enjoyed exercising. During a few sporadic periods I decided that what I needed was a goal: to go down a dress size, to gain a certain amount of muscle, to deadlift a certain amount etc. BUT, those targets never stuck. I thought maybe I'm just not motivated, maybe I'm not strong enough, but in reality I enjoy exercise too much. For me, truly enjoying exercise is about listening to my body and changing things up rather than being a slave to the plan. Here are 5 things I've learned about exercising for enjoyment:

1. Don't be afraid to skip a session

It is still so commonly thought that rest is the enemy of achieving your goals. In reality if your body is telling you it needs a rest, it needs a rest. Over exercising or 'pushing through' is in fact going to be detrimental to achieving your goals.

2. You don't need a goal

Yep, I said it! You don't need to be aiming for something to make your workout worth it. I remember my first day in a new gym and one of the trainers asked why I was training, When I replied because I love it and it's good for me, this didn't seem to be a good enough answer. So I'm here to tell you that how or why you move your body doesn't matter, its moving it that matters!

3. Find what you love

Some people love running, I don't. Some people love playing sport, I don't. So I don't run and I don't play sport. I challenge you to trying lots of different exercise, I guarantee you'll one (or loads!) you love. It could be yoga, weightlifting, tai chi, netball, boxing, spin or any number of things. If you do what you enjoy, not only will you progress, but the time you spend on it will benefit you in so many more ways.

4. Buddy up

Exercising with friends is the easiest way to make it more enjoyable. The hardest and most fun classes I've ever done have been with friends. Even going to classes in a room full of strangers has the same effect. I recommend Digme, Kobox, UN1T or WIT for the ultimate workout and friend making session in one! It must be something about sweating together that brings you closer!!

5. Do it for YOU

Some people say that exercise is their meditation. Half an hour of time for yourself. Doing something that fuels and motivates you is the best form of self-care. Don't get carried away with what your friends are doing, don't feel you need to be exercising like other people in the gym, do it for YOU.
